Animal Charm: Movie Poster Design (Voting Open)

A contest I entered on Talenthouse.com. The contest was to design the movie poster for the upcoming indie flick "Animal Charm" starring Sadie Frost (Best know for her role as Lucy in Bram Stokers Dracula). Not much was said about the movie to make a poster. But from the visuals shown in the video as well as the stills found online, I noticed that the movie has a lot of bold colors and deep shadows. So I brought those bold colors and shadows into the poster. What stood out to me were Sadie Frosts character which made a cool silhouette and the three women wearing masks. Together they made a interesting composition for a movie poster (in my thoughts). Also I skewed the angle for a more dramatic effect and better use of the poster size. I had fun working with a limited palette. It came out very bold. I hope you like it.

Stan Lee Foundation Superhero Contest

Here is the sketch of the character sketch I sent into the Stan Lee Foundation superhero contest.
I didn't want to post the colored over version just yet, big difference. This is a character redesign of a 3d model I made back when learning 3ds max. Cross your fingers! The grand prize is that you get to go to comic con 2011 in San Diego, meet Stan Lee, get you character made into a sculpture/toy and also meet Todd McFarlane (CREATOR OF SPAWN!) in Arizona at his headquarters. I would die. Wish me luck!

EDIT: The colored final version is on the website, Voting starts February 8th. Tell your friends, spread the news! Vote for me! Here is the link! John Greens Submission for The STAN LEE FOUNDATION SUPERHERO CONTEST!

Silent Hill: Downpour, Gravestone Submission.

So I entered the Silent Hill: Downpour, create your own gravestone contest. This is the design I went with. The rule said to create the creepiest gravestone. A lot of submissions I saw went with a demented monster. My interpretation is that silent hill is very sad and frightening. A lot of things are subtle, psychologically scary, not really in your face frightening. That's what I tried going with. If I were to see a sculpture like this, corroded, vandalized and dilapidated from which once was beautiful. It would stick in my mind. Just how Silent hill is. It has two sides, the somewhat normal, sad, cold and eerie environment and the other frightening, deformed, hellish side.

Sally: The Nightmare Before Christmas

A New wip, Im modeling Sally from The Nightmare before Christmas, as more of a realistic character....as much as a re-animated stitched together singing corpse can be.

"The Bloom Effect"

When I was looking at new video games, I noticed they all had this glowy look to them. After doing some research I learned that the term for this is "Bloom effect". It is used to simulate hotspots in light and give depth to the atmosphere, thus giving it a real life effect. So I thought I would give it a go, and try to figure it out.

Its actually really simple in 3ds max. you add a blur effect in the effects pullout menu. You then choose the "pixel selections" tab.Uncheck "whole image", check "Luminance" set the brightness to 100%, The min to 85% and the feather radius to something like 15%. Blend to 30% and Max to 100% Make sure its on mental ray when you render. It takes a few seconds after complete render to kick in. Do not use default scan line renderer, it chokes up something awful.

Here is the test image I made. I think the bloom effect is my new friend, it looks so cool! Here is the before and after.

New Model W.I.P: Phoenix from the X-Men (Part II)

At first i wanted the Phoenix to look like Famke Jansenn from the x-men movies. But it was brought to my attention on the zbrush forums that I should go for a more realistic red head. that is what follows the famke jansenn model.

New Model W.I.P: Phoenix from the X-Men

Here are a few work in progress shots. I'm holding off on the costume and working on the face. I want to redesign the costume a little.
