Majoras Mask: 3d Model

Im so happy with my recent side modeling project of Majoras mask. It was fun to model and eventually i would love to have it 3d printed when I have the money. I'd love to have it be a wall piece in my room...Although that stare...those eyes...might be too intense.

It was poly modeled in 3ds max, sculpting and maps were made in Zbrush, Photoshop and Flash. I always wanted to model the mask and was heavily inspired by the rustic version, 3D artist Cordell Felix made.

I also made a gif of the model. It's a slightly changed model with the eyes as a separate piece. They were rigged with dummy's and look at constraints. A simple animation. I call it, Majoras mask, quietly judging the content of what it's seeing.

Batman Returns: Selina Kyles Apartment W.I.P

I really wanted to design an architectural space for my portfolio. I was stumped and one night one of my favorite movies "Batman Returns" came on. There are a lot of cool spaces that were created in the movie but I had to recreate Selina Kyles (Catwoman) room. There were so many items and it has tons of character in my opinion. Also I really wanted to model the neon sign.

Upon starting the modeling process I drew a orthographic view. I watched all the clips in which she is in her apartment and took many screen grabs to make sure I got everything down to the T.
The second step was modeling the rooms walls and floor. From there I started building up the unique wall moulding and door shapes. Plus adding the items that were central to the layout and drew your eye first. The tables, the unique chair and lamp.....and I couldn't resist modeling the sign to be honest.
I did a quick render to adjust the lighting for the neon sign, which was difficult to get completely right in 3ds Max, but I believed i achieved the correct color and brightness that was seen in the movie. Neon's very bright but the color and light only reach so far, as opposed to how a light bulb acts.

I have started texturing and adding more models to the scene to give it that cluttered feel, like in the movie. So it doesn't seem so 3d, or bare.

There is still more to model for the room but I am working on it because I am in love with this project. i will be sure to post more as I go along.

Diamond Rendering for fun: Kelis's Acapella mask

So I wanted to do something with all the Diamonds I modeled. So I decided to try and recreate the mask from Kelis's music video for "Acapella". Just the mask. The model was used to shape and place the diamonds on the face.

Here is the reference.

Diamonds Render

Modeled in 3ds max these diamonds were a experiment in rendering caustics and transparent materials.

The P.I.N.C.H Foundation Logos

I worked with the non profit organization, The P.I.N.C.H (People In Neighborhoods Can Help) Foundation to recreate their company logo. As well as to assist in making tickets, flyers, social media pages and other logos. I was first in contact with company founder and Director Frank Sullivan in 2012 to recreate the organizations logo. He had a basic idea in his head and I was able to work with him to achieve what he wanted.

The logo he wanted was something that could be easily identified and be something that could be stamped on cards, shirts, posters and other tangible media. It started out as a two color scheme of black and red by his suggestion but was deemed too dark for a company that helps people in need in my opinion so I suggested using bright warm colors. The final approved logo has been used since.

The logo was recolored and slightly tweaked in 2013 to showcase "Boston Strong" colors of Blue and Gold after the Boston Marathon bombing. The logo was used in invitations, business cards, and t-shirts to promote a banquet and fund raiser held in September, honoring locals in Boston as well as Boston mayor Thomas M. Menino.

Logo Work & Website Design

Below are some samples that I have been allowed to release of my work with companies around The New England area.

I worked with Robert Starr of MASCo to redesign the company website and logo to be more eye-catching, yet simple, so that people of any age would be able to navigate it with ease.

Bakery Bowls, a local start-up in Massachusetts that caters in the sense of Edible arrangements only with baked goods; contacted me in order to create a logo for their business. The owner and company founder, Jacqueline Fornaro, had a basic idea sketched out but wanted me to elaborate and make it more detailed. Above is the concept process that I worked through with her to help create the final logo that was
desired.

Through The Wormhole with Morgan Freeman promotional cards were created for The Science Channel through Revelation Entertainment and The Incubator.

"Jilted?" A short lived reality show on Wetv about couples that have been together for a while and wanted to get married or quit the relationship. I created the promotional cards that were used as well as the shows logo through The Incubator, which produced the series for the channel.

Grimes Oil Co. Now Grimes Energy, a company based in the New England area contacted me to help reboot their image. They wanted it to be bold and eye popping yet keeping their signature purple logo, which was also revamped. The website was made to be simple enough for any age to navigate through as well as bold in color.

I made a thing...

After seeing the MTV VMA's performance from Mileyh Cyrus and Robin Thicke. I saw Robin Thickes outfit and was like...wow dude, really? Thats like a Footlocker employee outfit...then it hit me that it looked like Beetlejuices suit! So of course a quick Photoshop pasting job and color corrction later, Voila!
EDIT: I kind of wish I didn't make it either. My name is next to Miley Cyrus's right leg if you look closely. I wish I watermarked it bigger...But I hate watermarks, it detracts from the picture in my opinion. I posted it to Tumblr and by the next day it garnered thousands of posts, showed up on multiple websites, even MTV and VH1. The original image has been filtered and resized, and taken, and I feel selfish to say that I didn't get any credit. It's probably the biggest thing Ive done, and I only have my word and word from friends that I am the one that made this. So stupid.
To date it has 147,861 likes and reblogs.

I also made this one. Lady Gaga was dressed as Venus DiMilo or whatever she thought she was. But when I saw this one picture it reminded me of the little mermaid when her voice was taken by Ursula...Wasnt that successful a post compared to the Miley Cyrus and beetlejuice post.

Queen of The Damned: Akasha Illustration

A sketch I did in Photoshop of Akasha from Queen of The Damned

X-Men Sketches

I sketched some X-men. The X-men have always been a favorite of mine. So I drew three of my favs. The Storm sketch was done on paper with marker and pen, it's her latest design in the comics, I always loved Storm with the mohawk. The jean Grey sketch I did in Photoshop and the Wolverine sketch I did with a crumby old bic ballpoint pen, it was a good exercise in crosshatching.

The Legend of Zelda: Majoras Mask sequel idea

I have been playing around with an idea after seeing the phenomenal work of Sean NG and his "The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Future Past" game designs. My idea started out when I drew this Butterfly, inspired by owl butterflies, one day. I thought, how about a Owl/Swallowtail butterfly with markings like Majora's Mask.

This is what I came up with in my sketchbook. I wanted it to look like a old Entymology field book page. I used acrylic paint with marker and colored pencil. I even wrote a little back story to go with it.

Majora Larvatum Papilio (The Majora Masked Butterfly)
This species of Butterfly is located exclusively in the land of Termina. Because of the striking eye pattern on its wings and close resemblance to the legendary Majora’s Mask it has very few predators in its adult form. Few people have been able to observe and document this species in the wild because the wing pattern is said to drive people mad.
It is said that when the hero Link defeated the evil entity Majora’s wrath, that the parasitic mask broke and dispersed into the surrounding area. Legend has it that the evil magic still contained within these lost pieces seeped into the land; effecting plant life and wild life alike. An explanation as to why this species of Butterfly holds a striking resemblance to the fabled mask."

I had so much fun doing that piece and thinking of the back story that I thought "Why stop there?" What if Nintendo were to have a sequel to Majora's Mask!? So I created a boss character that I imagined would be in the game. I'd love to work out this idea more, I have so many ideas!! But first things first and that's to find a new job *COUGH* NINTENDO HIRE ME!! *COUGH*

"The Legend of Zelda: The Great Fairy (Majora’s mask fragment infected)
Within the ending of Majora’s mask, the mask was destroyed. But instead of being completely destroyed it broke into many fragments and were flung upon various parts of Termina and the surrounding areas. Over time the evil magic still held within these pieces has infected the areas and the inhabitants.
One of the infected characters I thought would be cool was the Great Fairy. As I see it the little fairies and The Great Fairy are somewhat mischievous and collect shiny/peculiar items. The smaller fairies came across a fragment of Majora’s mask in the woods and brought it to the The Great Fairy. Over time the piece (in the possession of The Great Fairy) slowly overpowered her, the great fairy fountain and the land she oversees. In this case the woods.
I see this as a boss character to fight. The Great Fairies are larger than humans and she would be a formidable boss. The eyes on the wings would hypnotize the opponent, maybe even paralyze. Somewhat like Medusa’s gaze. When the character is frozen in his tracks she strikes with magic and slashes with her long black fingernails.
The smaller fairies are enchanted by the mask as well and are under the control of The Great Fairy; They would attack the opponent but wouldn’t do much damage. The trick would be to use a mirror shield to reflect the hypnotizing eye pattern on the wings, back at the great fairy and then attack the fragment without harming the fairy. When the piece is detained or destroyed the fairy goes back to normal as well as the infected land."

New Sketchbook Work! Finalized Pieces: Part 2

Here are more pieces from the new sketchbook I have been working on.

Work Website Closed

I recently had to take down my portfolio website JohnGreenanimation.net that I've had since College. Freelancing hasn't been steady and I couldn't make the payments. Womp Womp.

It's ok though. I can use this as my portfolio site till I can regroup. I never liked my website URL to be honest. John Green is a common name and it was the only one available at the time. The down side is that I have business cards with my website on them, ugh.

New Sketchbook Work! Finalized Pieces: Part 1

Hi everybody! Ive been working a new sketchbook since the new year and I wanted to share some of the work. The goal with this sketchbook is to work with color and make a more finalized piece on paper than just a sketch, so I put a lot of detail in these.

I tinted the paper with an acrylic wash and the line work and color was done in ink and colored pencil mostly. In some of the pieces you can see I was on a real paisley and tattoo art inspired kick.

Enjoy!
